How many times have you heard that Vitamin C has amazing benefits for your body - especially when you're sick! Soon as I feel sick, I grab some Corenza C, ACC 200... that whole thing you know! Well, same goes for your skin.
When applied topically, vitamin C is one of the best anti-oxidants as well as preventative and restorative for aging. In my opinion, everyone should be using vitamin C on their skin!
What is Vitamin C?
Vitamin C is a water and oil soluble compound found naturally in fruits and vegetables. It may be synthetically produced as well which is what most vitamin supplements are made out of. There are actually a few forms of pure vitamin C and derivatives typically used in skin care such as absorbic acid, L-absorbic acid and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate.
Benefits of Vitamin C
Promotes collagen production
One of the biggest and best benefits of vitamin C is the stimulation of collagen production. The molecule of collagen is too large and cant be absorbed into the surface of the skin, therefore the use of topical ingredients to help stimulate your own collagen is key! The result is preventative for young skin and skin that has already started to age as it will reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Anti-oxidant & Free radical fighter
Everyday we are subjected to all sorts of toxins in our environments such as pollution, UV rays, cigarette smoke etc. Basically, free radical cells try to steal the healthy electrons from the healthy molecules and over time this results in cell damage and aging. So, what vitamin C does is that it basically donates an electron to the cell to neutralize the free radical damage, protecting it!
Skin recovery
Sun burn - something I hope you don't subject your skin too, but if it does happen, vitamin C will help the skin recover faster. It also helps wounds and scars heal faster since vitamin C is essential for the formation of new connective tissue! This is why its so great for acne and blemish prone skin as it helps to heal the lesions left behind.
Brightening & Scar lightening
I'm sure you've read or heard somewhere but vitamin C is great for hyper-pigmentation and freckles from the sun or acne scars. To get scientific with you - there is an enzyme called tyrosinase which is responsible for converting melanin. Vitamin C actually inhibits this enzyme hence less melanin is produced.
Improves Hydration & Moisture
If you're like me and suffer with dry and dehydrated skin, vitamin C helps boost moisture levels in the skin.
Side notes
- Don't go and directly apply vitamin C to your skin! The ph in a citrus fruit compared to your skin is very different and might result in burns and irritation.
- To have noticeable results in the skin, a product with 10-20% vitamin C in, is ideal.
- Make sure that when you're looking for a vitamin C product, that it is contained in a bottle that no light can puncture, keep it in a dark place to make it last and when you first open it, the product itself should be a pale yellow colour! Once its exposed to air for too long, it will lose its effectiveness.
